David Hurlbut joined church in Middle Haddam, Connecticut in full communion 30 January 1763. David was a
farmer and first settled in Portland parish, Town of Chatham, Connecticut 28 May 1737. His father gave him
100 acres in the Long Lots, near the parish of Middle Haddam, and in the following June, several other pieces of
land. In the same year he removed to that part of Chatham where he continued to reside for nineteen years. In
1756 he sold the greater par to the land to his brother Stephen and others, and removed to the town of Haddam,
but a few years later he returned to Middle Haddam. In 1770, then living in Middle Haddam, but late of Haddam,
he sold half and acre of land with house thereon, in Middlefield Soe, Middletown to Lewis Murisor for L28.
David's will was dated 11 March 1806 and was proved 26 October 1807. He had ordered that his debts should be
paid, and gave widow (Susannah) whatever she brought with her, together with one-third interest in real and
personal estate. The balance of his property to be equally divided among his children, including one share to the
heir of his deceased son David. His son Seymour was named executor in the will. Inventory presented 30
November 1807. If not a humorous incident, it yet must be classed as a stubbornly unyielding fact, the like of
which in the history of families, occurs perhaps not infrequently, that the estate of David Hurlbut proved
insolvent, paying only 66 cents on the dollar.
